ROMANESQUE ORPHREY PANELS

With St Peter and St Paul, fragmentary, Italy, possibly Orvieto, 13th century, 235 X 185 mm & 175 X 190 mm

€1100

These panels display a mixture of late romanesque iconography and a decorative tradition of the late antiquity. The twisted columns and the chequered arches are closely resembling the 6th century canon tables of late roman gospel books, whereas the figure of St Paul with a sword points towards a significantly later date. The orphrey panels at the Victoria and Albert Museum are clearly later, but display common features

Their occurrence on the antique’s market in Avignon in the 1970’s can possibly indicate that they belonged to an Italian ecclesiastical during the 14th century.
