GOTHIC MADONNA, Naples or South of France, wooden sculpture, 14th century € 6200
This sculpture is clearly influenced by French gothic sculpture of the mid 14th century, but displays a clearly heavier rendering of the head than commonly found in France. The provenance from Marseille indicates that the origin can be found within the realm of the angevine dynasty, with the count of Provence who was also the king of Naples. The child Jesus and the right arm of the Virgin have been lost, but otherwise the sculpture is well preserved. The surface has been overpainted in a discrete brown shade.
